What does it really mean to be courageous at work?

Courage isn’t about being fearless, reckless or taking unnecessary risks. It’s about recognising when something is worth doing despite the fear, uncertainty or discomfort involved, and choosing to act.

At work, those moments happen more often than we might think.

Taking on a new challenge. Admitting a mistake. Asking for help. Speaking up when something doesn’t feel right. Delivering difficult feedback. Approaching someone new. Standing your ground in a conflict. Or stepping forward to lead, whatever your position.

Join Gill Hasson, author of more than 30 books, including bestselling Mindfulness, Emotional Intelligence and Sunday Times bestseller How to Deal with Difficult People, for a thought-provoking fireside chat exploring what workplace courage looks like in practice and how we can develop it to grow, communicate, collaborate and lead with greater confidence.

Courage is not the absence of fear. Fear, hesitation and self-doubt are natural. Courage is about accepting that they are there and developing the readiness to act when something important is at stake.

And, courage isn’t an innate trait that you either have or lack. It’s a skill you can build over time, through practice and small, deliberate steps.

What you'll take away:

This conversation will invite you to rethink courage as a practical workplace capability that can help you:

  • Recognise the difference between courage and unnecessary risk

  • Develop the confidence to take on new challenges

  • Own mistakes, adapt and ask for help when you need it

  • Speak up and contribute in difficult situations

  • Navigate challenging conversations and relationships

  • Build stronger connections and collaborate more effectively

  • Step forward and demonstrate leadership, whatever your role

Ultimately, courage isn't about never feeling afraid. It's about knowing what's worth doing despite the fear.
